The Wine Family

Our Story

Wine Sarom and her husband, Hoeurn Siha, live with their youngest child; a 16 year old who has not finished school because he has had to start working to support the three of them – a sad reality for many children in Cambodia. They receive food from the pagoda (more specifically, the Buddhist vihara, or monastery) because Dad only makes $1 USD a day working in construction, which can be extremely sporadic hours.

Dad’s eyesight is completely gone and while it could be restored with surgery, and they have even found a way to pay for the medical bills, they simply cannot afford the travel and hotel costs to stay in Phnom Penh for the procedure! They are in a small amount of debt, and are eager to leave the slum by the river east of SALT School where they currently live. Their five adult children live nearby and do what they can to help and Wine Sarom hopes for a day where they can all find a place to live closer together. The family are Christians.
