The Mon Family
Our Story
Lon Salim is living with her sick husband and two sons in her grandmother’s house, along with her uncle who has a mental illness which isn’t able to be cared for in the proper way. Sometimes her uncle is aggressive, and she and her grandmother are nervous about taking him to Phnom Penh to receive the medicine he needs. One of her sons is in first grade at the public school but his father is doubtful he will be able to stay enrolled if the family cannot find a way to earn more money- an awful prospect! The family has accrued over $5,000 USD of debt due to sickness, paying off other debts and to buy a horse for her husband, Sambath Ramon, to pull his cart at work. Currently, he makes up to $8 a day in a labour intensive job pulling dirt for landscapers.
